String Bending
This ball of yarn will never become untangled. I went out to the back porch and found my youngest son wreaking havoc on a ball of yarn. Well, it wasn’t a ball exactly, it was more of a neatly wound skein of yarn, at least prior to his actions.
So, I had to ask him what he thought he was doing. His answer was not anywhere in my grasp of reality. He taught me something completely new. Children have the capacity to do that, and in ways we are never expecting, and in ways we adults perceive in a totally different manner.
‘What are you doing?’
‘String bending.’
‘String bending?’
‘Yep.’
‘That looks interesting.’
I say this to him as he twirls the previously neatly organized and rolled up symmetrical skein of yarn. It is now tangled unrepairably like a messy lasso over his head. Well, there goes my ball of yarn and what a fine alternate use for such a mundane object.
Sunday entertainment… at the sacrifice of future craft projects but perfectly used and well enjoyed, maybe even more than it would have been. String bending was born from the sacrifice of this ball of yarn.
